Our Animal Sanctuary

Our Animal Sanctuary

Flow is home to over 60 rescued farm animals – including pigs, rabbits, chickens, ducks, ponies, mules, dogs and cats. Each resident has been given a Chinese and an English name that matches their unique characters.

Many of our animals came to live with us because they had nowhere else to go. Some of our dogs were rescued from construction sites and breeding farms, our herd of ponies lost the land they were living on so we built paddocks and running grounds for them, and our piggy clan started out as three micro pigs, but we soon realized there was nothing ‘micro’ about them!

Animal Welfare First and Foremost

Animal Welfare First and Foremost

We want all our animal companions to live full, flourishing lives, so we focus our care to meet these three critical needs:

https://farmflow.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/physical-needs.jpg

1. Physical needs

We offer our residents healthy and nutritious diets, 24-hour access to fresh water, daily exercise, safe and spacious enclosures for rest and play, routine veterinary check-ups and vaccinations.

https://farmflow.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/mental-needs-scaled.jpg

2. Mental Needs

Animals are smart and they can get bored easily in captivity. To make their lives more interesting and enjoyable, we provide our residents with environmental and behavioral enrichments, such as different hiding spots, feeders, toys, allowing them to have choices, variety and mental stimulation.

3. Nature’s Calling

3. Nature’s Calling

All our residents are given the opportunity to express natural, species-specific behaviors, which is essential for their emotional wellbeing. For example, ponies are very social and enjoy grooming each other, pigs love to forage and root in the soil, bunnies are obsessed with digging and chewing, and chickens need a good dust bath to feel fresh and clean.

In providing a loving sanctuary for these animals, we get to enjoy their unique characters, learn important life lessons from them, and create beautiful shared experiences for you.

Let’s Meet Some Of Our Residents.

tin tin

The Miracle Dog

Found on the road after being hit by a car and left for dead, Tin Tin was in critical condition with little hope for survival. However, he made a miraculous turnaround and by the third day he was discharged from the vet hospital. Tin Tin’s resilience and irresistible charm captured everyone’s heart at Flow. We named him 天天, meaning “every day” in Chinese, serving as a reminder to cherish each moment of his second life.

buzz the pony

The Littlest Mom

Our ponies arrived in a very sorry and neglected state in 2011. On New Year’s Eve, Buzz – who was the littlest pony – gave birth to beautiful Bella. With love and care the herd all started to thrive and Buzz gave birth to Bond the following year. Both Buzz’s children are much bigger than her but don’t let her size fool you – she eats like a horse!

the piggy clan

Pigsaw Puzzle

This is what we call a “pigsaw puzzle”. Just like us, our piggies love physical connection with one another. Despite having a huge garden where they can spread out comfortably, they prefer to snuggle up, finding new ways to squeeeeze right into that space and fitting perfectly together like a puzzle.

PANDA

Our Canine Matriarch

Panda was the first dog to join us at Flow and has pretty much overseen the entire evolution of the sanctuary. She is the perfect matriarch caring not only for her own 7 pups, but also kindly to rabbits and chickens. Panda, along with her eldest son, Sky, are the only 2 dogs allowed to roam freely throughout the farm. If you see them on patrol, don’t forget to say hello!

bing bing & night

Dynamic Duo

Bing Bing is a tiny black and white dog whose angelic appearance hides the spiciest, sassiest character at Flow. Her best friend, Night is a big, fierce-looking black dog with the most gentle and timid heart. Both stray dogs found their way to Flow and have become our sanctuary superstars, charming everyone with their hilarious and contrasting personalities.

cotton & lotus

Hop Hop Hooray

Cotton and Lotus touched grass and soil for the first time in their lives when they came to Flow in 2023. Cotton, a lop-eared bunny, is laid-back and goofy. Lotus, resembling a beauty queen with heavy make-up, is bright, adventurous and an escape artist. We often find her exploring outside her enclosure, having somehow escaped, leaving poor Cotton behind looking lost and confused.

Rose, Matilda, Dorothy and Gigi

4 Lucky Hens

Rose, Tilly, Dorothy and Gigi won the jackpot when they were rescued by our British volunteers Alex and Richard, just minutes away from being slaughtered at the wet market. Now, they are enjoying the good life in the company of Mark, our dashing rooster.

sol & luna

Son and Mom

We rescued Sol and his mother Luna from a construction site. Emaciated and chained to a rusty pole, they were being kept as live barking machines. Now a little too comfortable and well fed, these two pooches have consistently failed their monthly health check-up and have been placed on the red list for “weight alert”.

With or Without You

This pair of retired working mules have a wonderful love-hate relationship, not dissimilar to many human couples. They bicker all day long but if separated will whine and pine for each other! They joined us in 2012.

The D family

Quack Quack

As part of a conservation effort to preserve an endangered native Zhongshan duck species called Zhongshan Ma Ya, 6 ducklings were gifted to Flow in 2022. We named them Donald & Daisy (of course), David & Diana, Danny & Denise. They have grown into a happy, tight-knit flock, spending most of the day dabbling and swimming together in the pond.
